For Antoine Fuqua, Making A Biopic On Michael Jackson Was A 'Spiritual Journey'
Filmmaker Antoine Fuqua's upcoming biopic on Michael Jackson is set to release in theatres and IMAX on April 24. Excitement is building as fans look forward to a cinematic look at the life and legacy of the pop icon, who resisted being defined solely as a Black artist. As the release approaches, the director is actively promoting the film and recently shared his perspective on the project, which will be distributed domestically by Lionsgate and internationally by Universal. In a video that Lionsgate released on Instagram, the director was heard saying, "It's a very spiritual journey, making a movie about someone like Michael.
Michael was a big influence on my career as a director, seeing how he refused to get put in a box as just a Black artist only. So to be a young black man in this country and see people that look like me and able to achieve international fame. It meant there was no ceiling. If they can do it, someone like myself can do it." 'It Gave Me A Lot Of Inspiration' "As a director, I've had that same battle of not getting into a box.
When I used to do videos, I didn't get the million dollar budgets. I got $50,000 budgets. But Michael was the first one that I saw really make an impact and cross over the way he did. It gave me a lot of inspiration.
Michael's whole life was giving to people this joy of his voice," Fuqua added in the video. The Training Day director said, "When I watched him on TV, he was always larger than life. For me as a filmmaker, it wasn't a leap to see it in a cinematic way. I don't think you can understand Michael Jackson as a human being unless you went back and go on a bit of a journey.
He was struggling between his love for his family and his love for his music." "He made music to transcend color and race. That's what make him so special. That's where the magic lives. Michael's life was epic.
My dream is for people to walk out feeling like they really understand Michael a little bit more," he added.
